ANCHORAGE – The leadership of the Alaska Democratic Party today praised State Senator Elvi Gray-Jackson’s announcement of her campaign for U.S. Senate. Gray-Jackson currently represents Midtown Anchorage in the Alaska State Senate, and has devoted nearly four decades of dedicated public service to the people of Alaska. Her announcement comes amid a grassroots petition campaign being launched urging her to run for office.
“Elvi is a strong, committed advocate for Alaskans, and has represented her constituents with honor and distinction in her more than 30 years of public service,” Casey Steinau, Chair of the Alaska Democratic Party, said after the campaign announcement. “Having seen her commitment to Alaskans up close and personal over many many years, I can say without hesitation that she’s exactly who we need to represent us in the U.S. Senate. She is smart, she is strong, and she is the right woman for the job."
“Alaskans deserve to have a U.S. Senator who says what she means and means what she says. Senator Gray-Jackson represents the uniqueness, diversity, and varied interests of our state, and her decades of public service and community connection make her the perfect candidate for this office,” Alaska Democratic Party Executive Director Lindsay Kavanaugh said. “Alaskans across the political spectrum acknowledge her unwavering dedication and public service over the years, and Alaska will be incredibly well-represented by her in the United States Senate.”
Senator Gray-Jackson began working for the Anchorage Assembly in 1988, including as Senior Budget Analyst and Director of the Budget and Legislative Services Office. She then worked for Municipal Light and Power as Director of the Alaska Energy Railbelt Authority. She served on the Anchorage Assembly (Midtown-District 4) from 2008 to 2017. She was Vice Chair from December 2015 to April 2016, and Chair from April 2016 to April 2017. She has also served on the Board of Directors for Boys and Girls Club of Alaska; Woodside East Homeowners Association; the National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors, and the NLC Finance and Investment Advisory Committees.
She ran for and was easily elected to the Alaska State Senate in 2018, representing the district which encompasses Midtown Anchorage. Throughout her time in public office, Elvi has sponsored and supported legislation and policies aimed at improving the community - from protecting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, to addressing discrimination, and ensuring the affordability of elder and veteran care.
Elvi has been a speaker at UAA for several years, teaching students about Municipal hierarchy and budget issues. She is also a mentor for young people, as well as serving twice as an agency supervisor for the social work practicum program. She is a recipient of the Women of Achievement Award and multiple other distinguished awards and recognitions. She is also a graduate of the University of Alaska, Anchorage.
