On the radar: Militia monitoring group weighs in on local "militia-type" member

Militia Watch, an online venture which began as a Medium publication in 2016 following several years of independent research into the world of U.S. militias, has responded to a piece I published yesterday about "Forgotten Freedoms" podcast host Dustin Sherman.

Save Anchorage, and Mayor Bronson are backing far-right candidates for the Anchorage Assembly, Stephanie Flynn Taylor, Randy Sulte, and school board candidate Rachel Ries. All three have appeared on Sherman's show, using his platform to spread their right-wing campaign messaging.

In a thread shared to Twitter this morning, Militia Watch confirmed they had previously documented Sherman in 2019 when he was oscillating between a few different III% splinter groups and posting what they referred to as "concerning meme content." The watch group also shared a photograph of Sherman making the III% hand sign at a cookout along with many other individuals.

A policy report: The Three Percenters: A Look Inside an Anti-Government Militia, published by the New Lines Institute last year, identifies the Three Percenter movement as a subset of the larger far-right anti-government militia movement, organized primarily around intense fear and loathing of the U.S. federal government.

Regarding those curious codes Sherman had previously shared to his Facebook account, Militia Watch noted that they appeared to be in the following format [Cipher ID] + Code [From Matrix defined as (Letter, Number)].

Militia Watch has speculated that the coded messages would likely look like the following word groupings (though this is only a guess), where an underlying matrix would have letters in positions like the third image (numbers follow the second image as an example of characters in order):

It's unclear what the coded messages say or who they were intended for. Sherman shared one of the codes on January 20, 2021, the day President Biden and Vice President Harris assumed office.

In any event, notable is that tonight Sherman is slated to headline a fundraiser for assembly candidate Kathy Henslee, who is also backed by the Save Anchorage group, Mayor Bronson, and Eagle River Assemblyperson Jamie Allard.

Maybe it's just me, but the importance of re-electing incumbent members of the assembly just skyrocketed.
