Identity Calls for Testimony Opposing Grotesque Anti-Trans Youth Sports Bill
SB 140, a blatantly discriminatory bill designed to exclude transgender girls and deny them the ability to participate fully in sports and the school community, has a hearing this week.

Alaska State Senator Shelly Hughes, a longtime member of the far-right Save Anchorage group, is very deeply concerned about fairness, so much so that she crafted and introduced SB 140, a blatantly discriminatory bill designed to exclude transgender girls and deny them the ability to participate fully in sports and the school community.
Identity, a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to advancing Alaska’s LGBT community through advocacy, education and connectivity, says that SB 140 would "profoundly violate all students' privacy" by forcing educators and coaches to identify and separate transgender youth from their peers.
The bill, says Identity, is part of a coordinated attack on transgender student athletes across the country. Like so called “bathroom bills,” these policies aim to erase and exclude trans people from sports, school communities, and all aspects of public life.
Alaska ACLU Advocacy Director Mike Garvey wrote on Twitter today that the mechanics of SB 140 were "especially grotesque," noting that the bill would require schools and sports teams to determine a student's "biological sex."
"How do you suppose they'll do that?" Garvey wrote.

Public testimony for SB 140 is scheduled for Thursday, March 3 at 10am and Identity is inviting members of the public and trans youth athletes to call in to the hearing and testify against the bill.
