Mayor, and Previously Governor, Are Deterring People From Taking Lifesaving COVID Measures By Using Rhetoric That Divides People.

Yesterday the Mayor of Anchorage defended the use of Nazi hate symbols in debate over a Covid mask ordinance. Recently the Governor, at an August 27 press conference, used his leadership platform to say urging people to voluntarily get a vaccination would be like “Europe in 1939”, also a heated Nazi comparison. He created illusions of forced vaccinations at that same conference on whether he should urge voluntary vaccination more strongly. https://alaska-native-news.com/gara-calls-on-dunleavy-to-apologize-for-false-covid-comments/57496/

“Leaders should unite, and not divide us in the face of a pandemic that is killing Alaskans in record numbers. The Governor should use his position as leader of this state to apologize for his use of heated, false Nazi comparisons. And today he should call on the Mayor of half the State’s population to do the same. Inflaming opposition by people who oppose vaccination or wearing a mask in crowded places will just keep us where we are. In a health and death crisis,” said Gara.

This week Alaska has had the highest COVID infection rates in the country. “This is the exact wrong time to divide people we want to protect from more illness and more death,” said Gara.

“We can beat this pandemic calmly, together. Using false Holocaust and Nazi rhetoric just creates division when we need to act as a team to save lives and protect a struggling economy,” said Gara.
