A group of individuals has organized an "Anchorage Stands With Ukraine" vigil for peace. The event will be held this Wednesday, March 2, from 6-7 pm at Anchorage Towne Square.
The event is being held to demonstrate solidarity for Ukraine after Russian president Vladamir Putin ordered Russia's military to attack the country last week. Putin's attack has drawn the condemnation of 87 countries. Demonstrations, too numerous to count, have been held around the world in support of Ukraine.
"We stand at this memorial recognizing that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is unlike anything seen since World War II. We stand at this memorial recognizing the need for peace due to the human toll that war takes on people. We stand together in solidarity for Ukraine at this memorial recognizing it has been a week since innocent people in Ukraine began to be killed, and a week since we saw the bravery of Ukrainians resist," a description for this week's vigil reads.
The vigil will include the worship choir of the New Chance Church (a Russian language-based church), elected officials, the voices of those directly connected to people in Ukraine, and multi-denominational leaders.
Event organizers ask individuals who plan to attend to bring a candle to light.
Over 120 people have already expressed interest in the event on Facebook. You can find the event page at this link.
