Anchorage Action Town Hall Tonight With Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Les Gara

Join Anchorage Action this evening for a town hall & discussion session with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Les Gara. Gara will answer your questions about climate change, poverty, oil and gas, education, women's rights, and trans rights.
Over the weekend and ahead of tonight's town hall, the Democratic candidate for Governor updated his website, further reiterating his stance on a woman's right to choose, writing that "the choice voters make in this election will be a choice about whether we protect a woman's right to make her own healthcare decisions." Gara says state law would be the "last line of defense" against an "anti-choice Supreme Court majority," noting that recent U.S. Supreme Court actions have threatened abortion rights.
"I will not appoint judges who would re-interpret the Constitution to take away this right. I will not allow the Legislature to roll back these rights. Unlike my opponents, I will not let my Attorney General fight against these rights. I believe your right to choose is part of your constitutional right to privacy," wrote Gara on his website.
On Equal Rights, Gara says he is proud to stand with Alaskans who want to end discrimination in housing and employment and those who believe all Alaskans have the right to live as equal citizens.
"Both of my main opponents still believe in the outdated view that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. While I respect former Governor Walker, I disagree with his unsupportive views on equal rights, and disagreed strongly when he let his Attorney General sue to end the right of same-sex couples to get married in Alaska. That's something I'll never allow my Attorney General to do," Gara said.
Gara's website says he will demand equality regardless of someone's race, color or religion, and regardless of whom they love. Gara writes that he's sponsored legislation supporting equal LGBTQ rights, and says he will always stand with Alaskans who all deserve to be treated as equals under the law.
"Liberty and Justice for All isn't just a phrase we should recite, it's something we should do," says Gara.
Tonight at 6 p.m. the citizens organization Anchorage Action will hold a Governor’s Race Forum. Alaskans from across the state are invited to attend.
